The Anxiety of Being a Stay-at-Home Doggie Mom

I know my last post was about being laid off so I am sure all of you must be thinking that I must have gone off the deep end. Also, if you’ve read this post from last March, you know that it was a hard transition for me from cat lover to pet parent of a dog. I am very aware of how absurd it all is, trust me.

Don’t worry, I am not sitting on my couch eating bon-bons, talking to Shiloh all day.

Today I took her to get a haircut. We were looking to try somewhere new that might be a little less expensive, you know, as I was just laid off. I found somewhere that was about 10 bucks cheaper and thought the reviews seemed OK and we would give it a try. When I dropped her off, I was told it would take two hours, which I thought was perfect because that would be the exact amount of time I would need to run an errand and be back to get her, while still being ahead of the traffic.

So I get back at 2:20 p.m., which is exactly two hours from when I dropped her off. No, I’m sorry she won’t be ready until 3:00 p.m. Excuse me, I live kinda far from here and planned my day out this way. She apologized profusely and lied to me about how the girl who told me that was new there, blah blah blah.

I ask if they have even started on her and I get an OH, OF COURSE. More bull. Then I begin to hear Shiloh crying in the background.

Now, let me pause for a moment and say that Shiloh has a lot of anxiety and it is not abnormal for her to whine and cry, especially if she heard my voice and knew I was there. Regardless of this fact, they are clearly running late and now rushing, and I have to sit there and listen to her cry. I can’t tell if they are hurting her or if she is just being her. So I sit there imagining myself bursting into their back room and ripping her out of their hands to take her home.

I know all of this is not completely rational. But let me ask you this: if you are an ACTUAL parent, you would not be handing your kid off to some random stranger to get a bath, and if he/she was having a haircut, you would be there with him/her the entire time. AND if you heard your kid screaming, you would react. Also, after the short baby phase, they can express themselves to you and let you know if something hurts or not. My pup is 5 and 1/2, and she can’t say stop it, that hurts.

Maybe I am going a little crazy. Maybe they did nothing wrong. They didn’t do a great job on her haircut, and even with the ten dollar discount they gave me for having to sit there and wait, listening to her cry for 50 minutes, I am not taking her back ever again.
